Creating independent learners

Before we continue, let’s take a short pause to see what’s coming up in the rest of the course. In Part 2, we’re going to examine how you can model independence for your learners, and why this matters. In Part 3, we’ll focus on stepping back and resetting student expectations around independence. Then, in Part 4, we’ll look at how you can use independence rules to reframe your classroom. Part 5 focuses on teaching students independence strategies – strategies they can take and use again and again in the future, changing how they think and act in the process. In Part 6, we’ll look at how you can use questioning to promote independence and the role this can play in your teaching. Parts 7 and 8 both explore how you can plan for independence. In Part 7 we look at starter activities, and in Part 8 we look at main activities. Finally, we wrap things up in Part 9 by exploring how you can use marking and feedback to promote independence. Taken together, this line-up of course sections gives you a suite of practical strategies and techniques you can use to create independent learners.
