Metacognition and self-regulation

Before we move on, let us take a moment to think about what comes next. In Part 2, we’ll turn our attention to seven key recommendations put forward by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) about how to develop metacognition and learner self-regulation in the classroom. After that, in Part 3, we’ll look at why it’s important to help learners understand what metacognition is and why it matters. In Part 4 we’ll examine the role modelling thinking plays in promoting metacognition. Then, in Part 5, we’ll work through a range of practical strategies and techniques that will allow you to promote and develop metacognition with your learners. In Part 6, we’ll focus on metacognitive questioning, and, in Part 7, we’ll explore the role of reflection and the necessity of reflection training if we want students to reflect effectively. Next, in Part 8, we’ll turn our attention to how we can help students to organise their own learning before finally, in Part 9, exploring how to use work reviews as the basis for promoting metacognition.
