Assessment for Learning

As we conclude this opening section, let’s take a moment to look ahead and see what’s still to come. In Parts 2-4 we focus our attention on eliciting and using information, one of our three key pillars of assessment for learning. After this, in Parts 5-7, we turn to the second pillar, giving formative feedback. Here, we’ll look at both written and verbal feedback, as well as the differences between formative and summative feedback. Finally, we’ll conclude the course by looking at our third pillar, opening up success criteria, in Parts 8 and 9. There, our focus will be on opening up learning objectives and how to use peer- and self-assessment.

  1. Learning Outcome 1: Examine the key tenets of assessment for learning and understand how these underpin effective teaching which raises student achievement.
  2. Learning Outcome 2: Explore and practice using a range of assessment for learning techniques, including whole-class feedback, opening up success criteria and peer- and self-assessment tools.
  3. Learning Outcome 3: Understand the importance of verbal and written feedback and how to make sure students always complete the feedback loop.
