Alternative lesson planning models

Before we continue, let us take a moment to look at what the rest of the course holds in store. Next up, in Part 2, we look at how lesson planning models can influence teaching and learning. This will help you to critically reflect on your own practice, as it currently stands. In Parts 3 and 4 we explore our first alternative lesson planning model: SOLO Taxonomy. First, we’ll cover the basics, then we’ll move onto next steps. The same approach is utilised in Parts 5 and 6, where we start off by looking at the basics of Philosophy for Children, before going on to examine this lesson planning model in more depth. After that, in Parts 7 and 8, we do the same with Mantle of the Expert, this being our third and final alternative lesson planning model. To conclude the course, in Part 9, we take some time to reflect on all three of the different models we’ve explored, before linking these to our existing classroom practice.

  1. Learning Outcome 1: Learn about a selection of alternative lesson planning models, including Philosophy for Children (P4C), Mantle of the Expert and SOLO Taxonomy.
  2. Learning Outcome 2: Explore different ways in which alternative lesson planning models can be used and how this can impact on student thinking.
  3. Learning Outcome 3: Apply one or more alternative lesson planning models by developing a number of creative lessons plans connected to your age group or curriculum area.
