Talk for Learning
Talk for learning
As we reach the end of Part 1, we can take a moment or two to look at what comes next. First up, in Part 2, we examine different types of talk, looking at Neil Mercer’s delineation of cumulative, exploratory and disputational talk. In Part 3, we develop this further, by exploring examples of each of these three different types. Next up, in Part 4, we look at what we need to do to train students to debate and discuss effectively. Then, in Part 5, we focus on a range of practical discussion strategies and techniques, before pairing these up with practical discussion activities in Part 6. In Part 7, we focus on a common problem many teachers face: how to elicit responses. We look at a selection of practical techniques any teacher can use to draw responses from their learners, enhancing classroom talk in the process. Next, in Part 8, we examine some of the ways teachers can base discussion around texts before finally, in Part 9, turning our attention to some of the techniques you can use to improve the quality of discussion in your classroom.
